Two people have died and three others were injured after a car struck them on a sidewalk in New York City.
On Friday, May 15, 61-year-old driver Elvin Suarez allegedly collided with a parked vehicle, which then initiated a chain collision with other vehicles before Suarez’s Mercedes SUV slammed into multiple pedestrians, according to ABC7.
The suspect was allegedly under the influence when the incident took place on Amsterdam Avenue near 109th Street on Manhattan’s Upper West Side at around 6:00 p.m., CBS News reported.
While three men aged between 36 and 52 were rushed to the hospital in critical condition, the deceased victims were identified as 46-year-old Jason Negron and 35-year-old Michael Saint-Hilaire, per CBS News and NBC New York.
Meanwhile, footage showcased three people standing behind a van before the SUV collided with it, per NBC New York. A witness then claimed that one man became trapped underneath the vehicle, while a second was bleeding.
People were also captured on camera trying to lift a vehicle so a person could be rescued from underneath it, per ABC7.
The driver appeared confused as he exited his vehicle, one witness told the outlet.
