The Nigeria Police Force has announced with deep sorrow the passing of former Inspector-General of Police and former Chairman of the Police Service Commission, IGP Solomon Ehigiator Arase (Rtd.).
He passed away in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025, at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, following a brief illness.
A statement from the Force confirms that the sad news was officially conveyed to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, by the late Arase’s first son, Mr. Solomon Osabohien Arase Jr.
Born on June 21, 1956, in Edo State, Arase joined the Nigeria Police Force in December 1981 and served in several strategic capacities, including Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, pioneer AIG of the Force Intelligence Bureau, and DIG in charge of the FCID.
He became the 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police in April 2015, retired in June 2016, and later served as Chairman of the Police Service Commission from January 2023 to June 2024.
He was also a Fellow of the Defence College and a respected member of the Body of Benchers.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, paid a condolence visit to the family in Abuja, extending heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the entire Force.
He described Arase as a distinguished officer who embodied professionalism, leadership, and a commitment to police reforms and national security.
The late IGP is also remembered for his humanitarian efforts through the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation, which supports the education of children of fallen officers and indigent students.
