The U.S. State Department has approved a possible $346 million Foreign Military Sale to Nigeria, covering munitions, precision bombs, rockets, and related equipment. The request includes over 1,000 MK-82 general-purpose bombs, thousands of components for Paveway II guided bombs, 5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II rockets, and other associated gear, technical support, and logistics services.
According to the State Department, the sale will strengthen Nigeria’s ability to tackle terrorist threats, combat illicit trafficking, and enhance security in the Gulf of Guinea, without altering the region’s military balance. The munitions will be integrated into Nigeria’s armed forces without difficulty, supporting U.S. foreign policy goals and reinforcing the security of a key partner in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The main contractors for the deal are RTX Missiles and Defense, Lockheed Martin Corporation, and BAE Systems. No offset agreements have been proposed, and the sale will not require additional U.S. personnel in Nigeria or affect U.S. defense readiness. The final cost may be lower, depending on Nigeria’s confirmed requirements and budget.
