Trump ally Charlie Kirk shot at campus event in Utah

The suspect in the shooting of political activist Charlie Kirk is not yet in custody, according to a spokesperson from Utah Valley University, despite the school saying earlier police did have someone in custody.

Initially, the school said the suspect was in custody.

Kirk, who was invited by a student group, was speaking Wednesday afternoon when a shooter fired from a campus building about 200 yards from Kirk, a spokesperson told CNN.

Turning Point USA events at college campuses have long attracted protests and controversy.

Earlier this year, violence erupted and members of the group reported assaults as well as damage to their equipment during an event at the University of California Davis.

In 2019, a conservative activist was attacked while recruiting students for the group at UC Berkeley.

Turning Point USA events also often draw petitions calling on Universities to cancel the event. Wednesday’s event had such a petition but fewer than 1,000 people had signed it.

The same type of event was set to take place at Utah State University in Logan on September 30. A petition against that event drew more than 6,500 signatures.

“Allowing him to speak on our campus would not only misrepresent the values we hold dear but also create an environment where divisive rhetoric could flourish,” the Utah State University petition states.

The University responded with a statement saying the event was being hosted by a student club, and that the “The university provides equal access and support to all student organizations, regardless of their political or social views.”
