Nigerian comedian and actor, Okey Bakassi, has been appointed the traditional ruler of the Umuihuocha Autonomous Community in Mbaise, Imo State.
Born Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule on 23 October 1969, the popular entertainer will formally ascend the throne as His Royal Highness Eze Okechukwu Onyegbule, Okwe II of Umuihuocha Obohia Autonomous Community, upon his coronation.
The appointment marks a new chapter in Bakassi’s public life, transitioning from a celebrated career in the entertainment industry to a position of traditional leadership and communal responsibility.
Announcing the development via his social media page on Sunday, the 55-year-old comedian described the honour as a “Next Level” moment. In his post, he expressed gratitude to the people of Umuihuocha for the trust placed in him and acknowledged the appointment as a call to serve. “Service to Community,” he wrote, underlining the gravity with which he views the role.
In a follow-up message, Bakassi offered special thanks to members of his community for their faith in his ability to lead, promising to serve with dedication and humility.
The Umuihuocha Autonomous Community, located in the Mbaise region of Imo State, is one of several constitutionally recognised traditional entities in the area. The conferment of this title places Bakassi in a lineage of local rulers responsible for preserving customs, promoting peace, and guiding development within the community.
